Ease those menstrual cramps by trying out these sex positions that are exceptionally pleasurable. These sex positions are also easy on the girl.
Here’s how to best enjoy your special time of menstruation:
If you’re cramping, hard, lie on your back with your legs straight up or crossed in the air. “It’s calming and also helps circulation to the ladybits,” says supremely badass gyno Heather Bartos, MD, “This feels great on the back, allows for pelvic tilt which can diminish cramps and also can chill you out. It just feels relaxing too and we all need that during shark week.”
“Sometimes on your cycle you just want to feel relaxed and lazy,” says Dr. Bartos, speaking for us all. She recommends a position inspired by the the Reclined Bound Angle yoga pose where you’re on your back ala missionary but with your knees bent and feet pressed together. “This can help PMS symptoms too. Since you’re leaning back into the pose, your abdominal muscles relax which can help ease cramping.”
Shower sex is a great starter pose for women who aren’t sure about period sex, says Bartos. “Normally, women don’t love sex in the shower as water tends to make the vagina drier, but with the crimson tide surfing out, that isn’t an issue,” explains Dr. Bartos. For her patients, she also mentions that they can also direct the warm water directly on their back which can relax those nagging back cramps. A win-win!
If you’re extra crampy, lie on your side with your knees bent up in the universal “ow, I have fucking cramps” position. Have him kneel on the floor (use pillows if needed for height) and enter you that way and (hopefully) perform his cramp-healing penis magic. The best thing about this is that you can just kind of lie there and be tended to. Quite frankly, this is how sex should always be.
If you want to keep spillage to a minimum, get on your back, sister. (For the record, you’re not ever, like, gushing blood. You lose only 4 to 12 teaspoons — not tablespoons — your entire period.) Lie on your back and press your legs together, tilting your hips up to stem the tide. He kneels with his legs on either side of you and sits back on his heels to enter. Once he’s in, he can stay that way pushing forward or lower his upper body onto yours. Either way, with your legs slightly more closed, it’ll increase sensation for both of you.
If you’re a little squeamish and don’t want the full-on biology of Being a Menstruating Person in full view, lie on your stomach with your hips propped up on a (towel-covered) pillow with your legs slightly spread. He opens your legs slightly to enter you from behind. Feel free to rub yourself with your hand, grind against a pillow or pop a bullet vibe between your legs. Sexy yet oddly comforting.
Avoid the whole area entirely by going anal. (You can even leave your tampon in if you want. Woooo!) Stick that sexy bum of yours high up in the air, with your head down and a cheek (your face cheek) pressed to the mattress. Loop your arms back behind your knees. He holds on to your hips and makes his way in, bum-side. (Usual anal rules apply: lube, go slow, and more lube.) He can rub your clit or hold a vibe onto you as he thrusts. Whichever, he should do it because, period.
Embrace the hell out of Mother Nature by just reveling in it. Hop aboard — to increase your flow, dammit — and ride the hell out him. Go feral and do as you please. If some blood leaks out, all the better. Periods are normal and it’s high time he gets the fuck over it.
Another classic that’s excellent for period sex? Cowgirl. (Its equally classic little sister, Reverse Cowgirl, is also period sex-friendly.) Positions that put you on top leave you in control of the stimulation, so sex can be as intense or gentle as you want it to be.
Ask your partner to lie down on their back, and climb on top of them, with one knee on either side of their body. Face your partner for standard Cowgirl, or turn around to face their feet for Reverse Cowgirl.
If you want to change things up a little, ask your partner to sit up (while keeping their legs straight forward). This will allow them to grab your butt (if you’re facing forward in standard Cowgirl) or your boobs (if you’re facing away in Reverse Cowgirl).
Small changes like this can spice up a tried-and-true position without intensifying the depth of penetration.
Ask your partner to stand up and bend their knees until they’re shorter than you. Meet them face-to-face, and slide onto their penis or strap-on at a speed and depth that feels comfortable to you.
The Face-to-Face is an excellent alternative for those who prefer a position that puts them on top, but who want to try something a little more out-of-the-ordinary than Cowgirl or Reverse Cowgirl.
Standing sex is always a bold move — and why not use your period as an excuse to try something new?
Ask your partner to kneel on the bed with their legs totally bent and their torso sitting straight up. Then, squat until you land in their lap, and lean your back into your partner’s chest. When you sit, be sure to slide onto your partner’s penis or strap-on. You can then grind and move around in whatever way feels best for both of you.
The Chair puts a fun twist on Spooning Sex by (comfortably) turning it upright. It also gives you total control over the depth and intensity of play.
Ask your partner to sit on the bed, with their torso upright and their legs straight in front of them. Then, sit with your butt between their knees, and do the same. Once you’re both face-to-face and a little intertwined, you and your partner can wrap your legs around each other. (You can also leave them straight ahead, if that’s more comfortable.)
From there, you can pull each other closer to enjoy a little low-key penetrative intercourse. Or you can engage in some mutual masturbation. The Twister maximizes eye contact while minimizing penetrative intensity, making it all kinds of intimate.
Think of the Head-to-Toe as spooning sex with a twist: Instead of being head-to-head and toe-to-toe, you and your partner will both be head-to-toe.
Lie down as you would if you were spooning, but bend your knees a little less than usual. Ask your partner to lie down behind you, facing the same direction as you are, but with their head facing your feet and their feet behind your head.
You may have to play with the position a little to make sure your genitals line up, but once they do, your partner can penetrate you with their penis or strap-on, and you can gaze into each others’ eyes throughout intercourse.
Have your partner sit down with their legs crossed in front of them, and then sit on their lap, facing them, with your legs wrapped around their back. From there, you can grind, move up and down, or do whatever else feels good for you.
The Lotus is a little sweeter and cozier than classic Cowgirl, making it an excellent position for moments where you prefer the slow and sensual to the fast and intense.
