WorldCupqualifier: Nigeria beats Liberia with Iheanacho double
THE Super Eagles started their Group C FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualification race on a winning note beating Lone Star of Liberia 2-0.
Iheanacho opened scoring in the 21th minute from a corner-kick set piece from Everton winger Alex Iwobi, Iheanacho wasted no time when he received a pass from Iwobi, hitting the back of the net with his left foot.
Liberia first attempt on goal came in the 25th minute from Terence Tisdel through a direct free kick but it was an easy catch for the Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye who was unruffled throughout the encounter.
After several attempts from Victor Osimhen and Moses Simon, Iheanacho double the lead for Nigeria in the 45th minute and ended the first half with a 2-0 for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria started the second half full of confidence and could have added a third goal but Osimhen missed a one-on-one chance a minute after the start of the second half when his attempt was saved by Liberia goalkeeper Ashley Williams, Iheanacho then headed over the follow up attempt from Ola Aina’s cross inside the 18 yard box with the post empty.
Coach Gernot Rohr made five substitutions Osimhen was replaced by Paul Onuachu while Samual Kalu replaced Moses Simon. Ahmed Musa came in for Iheanacho while Shehu Abdullahi entered for Alex Iwobi. Peter Etebo completed Nigeria substitutes as he replaced Joe Aribo in the dying minutes. Liberia made two substitutions.
The Eagles will fly out of Lagos to the island of Mindelo to take on the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in a Day 2 fixture on Tuesday, 7th September.
